Description
Haver & Boecker MEC4-MCU MEC4.0 Machine Control Unit, Weighing & Packaging System Main PLC Controller
Product Description
The MEC4-MCU is the core machine control unit for Haver & Boecker MEC4.0 automated packaging, bagging and bulk weighing machinery. Built as an IEC 61131-3 compliant PLC controller programmed via CoDeSys, it acts as the central control hub for filling machines, valve baggers, bulk weighers and palletising equipment. It integrates onboard digital and analog I/O, embedded Ethernet switch, serial and CAN interfaces, and removable SD card for program, recipe and production log storage. The unit supports modular expansion with WCM weighing modules, DCU digital control units and touchscreen HMI terminals. It executes fast weighing cycles, actuator sequencing, sensor diagnostics and communication with field devices, widely used in cement, minerals, grain, chemical and building material packing lines.

MEC4-MCU
Compatibility & Installation Traps
Compatibility
- Primary host system: Haver & Boecker .0 packaging and weighing machine platform
- Expansion: -WCM, -DCU, -HMI, CAN remote I/O
- Protocols: Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, CANopen, internal Haver machine bus
- Note: This controller is machine-specific for Haver bagging lines; it cannot be directly substituted with generic CoDeSys PLCs without original machine firmware and recipe configuration.
Critical Installation Traps
- Machine-Specific Firmware & Recipe Lock: The -MCU stores bagging cycle parameters, scale calibration and machine motion logic on the SD card. A replacement unit will not operate correctly without restoring the original SD card or loading the site machine project.
- CAN Bus Termination Rules: The internal CAN network for WCM weighing modules requires correct termination. Missing or duplicate terminators cause unstable weight readings and intermittent filling cycle faults.
- Load Cell Signal Noise Sensitivity: Analog weight inputs are highly susceptible to electrical noise. Weight cables must be shielded and routed separately from solenoid and motor power wiring. Noise will lead to unstable setpoint and overfill/underfill.
- SD Card Handling Risk: The SD card contains all production recipes and calibration data. Removing the card while powered can corrupt the filesystem and cause total loss of machine configuration.
- ESD Sensitivity: CPU, CAN transceivers and analog front-end circuits are ESD-sensitive. All module replacement must be performed on a grounded ESD workstation with wrist strap.
- DIN Rail & Wiring Torque: Loose 24VDC supply terminals cause intermittent resets during high-speed filling cycles. Do not over-tighten screw terminals to avoid PCB trace damage.
- Ethernet Network Segregation: The onboard Ethernet switch connects HMI and upper-level SCADA. Do not mix machine control traffic with office LAN; network congestion delays weighing triggers.
- Hot Swap Restriction: The -MCU does not support hot swapping while the bagging machine is in automatic production. Live removal will abort filling cycles and trigger safety interlocks.
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
- Pre-installation inspection: Inspect housing, terminal blocks and front connectors for corrosion or damage. Confirm model -MCU and Haver part number against machine spare documentation.
- Configuration backup: Copy the full SD card contents including machine firmware, scale calibration parameters, filling recipes and I/O mapping to the engineering PC.
- System preparation: Stop the packaging machine, place equipment into safe manual mode and lock out material feed and pneumatic supplies.
- Energy isolation: Cut 24VDC control power to the rack and apply lockout/tagout. Allow internal capacitors to discharge before wiring disconnection.
- Mechanical replacement: Release DIN rail latch, remove wiring terminals and extract the faulty controller. Mount the replent on the DIN rail and re-terminate all power, I/O, CAN and Ethernet cables following the machine wiring diagram.
- Power-up and self-test: Restore 24VDC supply. Observe front panel LEDs. Insert the backed-up SD card and verify controller boots to run state. Execute onboard watchdog and bus diagnostics.
- Machine and weighing validation: Load saved recipes and scale calibration. Test single filling cycles, check weight stability, CAN communication to WCM modules, HMI access and all safety interlock functions.
- Process qualification: Run test batches at low speed, verify fill accuracy, bag sealing sequence and alarm handling. Confirm no false scale trips before returning the machine to automatic production.
- Decommissioning: Pack the deive in anti-static shielding bags, label with fault symptoms for failure analysis. Keep the original SD card securely archived.
