Description
Bently Nevada 3500/32-01-00 Relay Output Module, 4-Channel Relay Module for 3500 Machinery Protection Rack
Product Description
The 3500/32-01-00 is a 4-channel relay output module for the Bently Nevada 3500 TSI machinery protection system. It receives alarm and trip logic signals over the proprietary 3500 backplane from monitor modules such as 3500/40 and 3500/42. Each relay can be independently configured for Alert, Danger, OK or custom voting conditions to drive external trip circuits, alarm annunciators, plant logic or auxiliary interlocks. This variant 01 = standard relay configuration; 00 = no hazardous area special options. It is not a measurement acquisition card; it only provides dry contact relay outputs based on rack logic. Commonly deployed on steam turbines, gas turbines, centrifugal compressors and generators within power, oil & gas and petrochemical plants.

Compatibility & Installation Traps
Compatibility
- Primary host system: Bently Nevada 3500 machinery protection rack
- Compatible rack modules: 3500/40, 3500/42, 3500/22M, 3500/91, 3500/92, 3500/94M
- Software: Official Bently 3500 Rack Configuration Software
- Note: This relay module does not perform signal measurement. Relay logic mapping must match the site alarm voting scheme. Different 3500/32 suffix versions with different contact ratings are not drop-in compatible.
Critical Installation Traps
- Relay Logic Mapping Must Be Restored: The replacement module requires loading the original relay assignment and voting logic. Mismatched mapping can cause missing trip signals or false external alarms.
- Contact Load Rating Limits: Do not exceed the rated voltage and current of relay contacts. Overload will weld contacts and compromise machinery trip integrity.
- SIL Loop Consideration: If this relay is part of a SIL protection trip chain, the entire safety loop architecture must remain approved. Relay substitution requires safety verification and proof testing.
- ESD Sensitivity: Backplane interface and relay control circuits are ESD-sensitive. Replace only at a grounded ESD workstation with wrist strap.
- Slot Assignment Rules: Install in designated I/O slots. Improper slot placement blocks backplane logic signals and renders relay outputs inactive.
- External Trip Circuit Wiring: External trip cables must be segregated; induced noise may cause contact interference. Do not run high-power cables alongside relay wiring.
- Hot Swap Risk: Hardware supports hot insertion, but relays may change state during swap. For critical turbine trip circuits, implement approved bypasses and work permits.
- Contact State on Power Loss: Confirm fail-safe state (normally closed / normally open) for trip logic. Power loss of the rack will set relays to their de-energized condition.
Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
- Pre-installation inspection: Inspect front panel, rear relay terminal blocks and backplane edge connector for bent pins, corrosion or burn marks. Confirm part number 3500/32-01-00.
- Configuration backup: Export full rack configuration including relay assignments, voting logic, contact action and alarm latch settings using 3500 configuration software.
- System preparation: Implement approved safety bypasses for all trip circuits linked to this module. Notify control room and obtain work permit.
- Energy isolation: If hot swap is not permitted, de-energize the 3500 rack and apply lockout/tagout. Allow capacitors to discharge.
- Mechanical replacement: Release ejector latches and extract the faulty relay module. Insert the new 3500/32-01-00 into the assigned slot and fully engage the connector.
- Power-up and self-test: Restore rack power. Observe module LEDs and execute self-test. Verify backplane communication with all monitor modules.
- Relay logic validation: Load saved configuration. Test each relay by simulating Alert / Danger conditions, verify contact status and external alarm/trip response.
- Process qualification: Confirm all protection functions operate as designed, no unintended machine trips occur. Remove safety bypasses only after full validation.
- Decommissioning: Place defective module in anti-static bag, label fault symptoms for failure analysis and archive the latest rack configuration file.
