Description

VISATRON VN115/87-EMC is a crankcase oil mist detector

Brand: Schaller Automation (VISATRON) | Model: VN115/87-EMC Oil Mist Detector (OMD)

Product Title & Description

The VISATRON VN115/87-EMC is a crankcase oil mist detector, designed for four-stroke marine / industrial diesel engines. It continuously samples crankcase gas and optically measures oil mist opacity. When dangerous oil mist concentration is detected, it triggers pre-alarm and main alarm signals for slowdown or engine shutdown to prevent crankcase explosion. Widely used on merchant ships, power plant diesel gen-sets, offshore engine units. It is the EMC enhanced version of VN/87 series, replaced later by VN115/87plus.

Core Product Overview

VN115/87-EMC adopts optical opacity measurement principle. It uses single suction pipe sampling for 4-stroke engine crankcase compartments. The built-in measuring head contains light emitter & receiver; oil mist particles attenuate light beam, the controller calculates mist density. It has pre-alarm (70% of main alarm threshold) and main alarm relay outputs. EMC enhanced hardware for strong electromagnetic interference environments on vessels and power stations. It has self-test function, wire-break monitoring and LED status bar for local fault indication. When oil mist rises above threshold, relay contacts activate to send trip signal to engine safety control system. It complies with IACS UR M10 marine classification rules.

Product lifecycle note: VN115/87-EMC was phased out, succeeded by /87plus. It is now mainly available as spare, reconditioned or exchange unit for legacy engine retrofit/maintenance.

FAQ

Q1: What engine type is /87-EMC for? A1: Designed for 4-stroke diesel engines, single suction pipe sampling. VN116/215 series for 2-stroke engines.

Q2: What risk does it protect against? A2: Crankcase oil mist explosion. When bearing failure creates heavy oil mist, it sends alarm and engine slowdown/shutdown signal.

Q3: Is /87-EMC still in production? A3: Discontinued. Replaced by /87plus. Now sold as new old stock, refurbished or exchange spare for existing vessels/gensets.

Q4: What output signals does it provide? A4: Dry contact relay outputs: pre-alarm and main oil mist alarm, plus cable break fault monitoring.

Q5: Warranty for VISATRON /87-EMC? A5: Refurbished/NOS unit carries 12-month warranty under proper installation and operating conditions.

Installation & Configuration Guide

7.1 Pre-installation Preparation

Verify /87-EMC unit, inspect measuring head, LED indicator and pipe ports. Prepare sampling pipeline, G1/2 fittings, flexible hoses, 24VDC power, shielded alarm cables. Isolate engine and power before installation.

7.2 Installation Steps

Mount detector in engine room suitable location. Route sampling pipe from crankcase compartments to detector inlet, install flexible bellow and gaskets. Wire 24VDC supply and relay alarm dry contacts to engine safety system. Check pipe tightness and no leakage. Keep optical measuring head clean.

7.3 System Configuration & Commissioning

Power up unit, check green ready LED. Perform manual self-test function to verify alarm relay actuation. Check pipe siphon oil level (follow manual). Simulate oil mist test via test box, confirm pre-alarm and main alarm trigger. Verify signal transfer to engine governor/PLC. Record commissioning test report.

7.4 Maintenance & Precautions

Regularly clean optical measuring window, inspect sampling hose blockage, pipe leakage and siphon oil level. Perform self-test periodically. Do not disable alarm interlock during operation. If false alarm or no detection, check sampling pipeline clogging and optical lens contamination before replacing the detector.
